Construction Notes

This S-Parameter Test Set for the DG8SAQ VNWA 3.0 Vector Network Analyzer is a simple project that can be completed in a few weekends. The S-Parameter Test Set increases the accuracy of the measurements made by the Vector Network Analyzer by being able to measure in both forward and reverse directions during Calibration and plugging the results in to a 12 Term Error Correction Equation that will correct for measurement errors such as source match and directivity error in both directions. It will also prevent you from having to turn the device around if you wish to measure all four S-Parameters. The parts list below is meant as a guideline. The parts list is simply a list of what I used and the sources. I encourage you to search for better parts, prices and sources. Who knows, you may already have quite a few of the parts available on hand. I would say that the only critical part is the Transfer Switch. The Transfer Switch should have a 24 Vdc or 28 Vdc coil and have as much isolation as possible. I highly recommend you purchase the best Transfer Switch you can afford. Nothing is critical in the construction so it can be built to suit your needs although you should keep all leads and cables as short as possible. I have enclosed my Front and Rear panel artwork based on the enclosure I have chosen. Please feel free to use the artwork if you wish. Cam Expert in New Hampshire makes great front panels from AutoCad .DXF files. I also chose to mount my DG8SAQ VNWA 3.0 inside the enclosure with the Test Set. This is optional as an external S-Parameter Test Set will work just fine. On this project the switch driver board I used was an unbuilt Ramsey RI1 Relay interface (FIGURE 1 below). The board is modified to work at 24 Vdc. The layout is a touch different and the new parts are listed in the parts list below and on the schematic above. It makes for a neat little package but a breadboard version will work great also. Lastly, in FIGURE 2 below I have an image of the layout for the RJ11 cable that goes between the Vector Network analyzer and the RI1 Relay Driver Board. A simple RJ11 telephone cable would do the job nicely. I guess thats about it for the construction notes.
